Consumer Tips: Navigating Prior Authorization
Infographic on How To Navigate Prior Authorization

Behavioral health is complex. Untreated behavioral health conditions, including both mental health and substance use disorders, have a significant impact on individuals, families, friends, and employers. Individuals with mental health conditions and/or substance use disorders need access to evidence-based services - the care that, based on scientific research, has been shown to result in improved health outcomes -- as well behavioral health care that is coordinated with their medical care. Behavioral health care organizations (your insurance provider) are committed to implementing programs that ensure patients have affordable access to high-quality, evidence based treatments.

There are hundreds of different medications, treatments, and procedures that are utilized for behavioral health and substance use disorders; and more are becoming available every day. Behavioral health care organizations work diligently to make sure that consumers receive the safest, most effective, and most reasonably priced medically necessary treatments. This is done in many different ways. Prior authorization is just one of the tools used by insurers to ensure your safety, provide you with the most appropriate treatment, and achieve optimal patient outcomes.
